CAN MY JEWELRY RUST OR TARNISH ?
Steel is an extremely durable metal, making it an excellent choice for jewelry. Steel jewelry can be worn every day and still look new for years to come. In fact, steel is so strong that it will resist scratches and damages.
Stainless steel is renowned for its durability and resistance to discoloration and oxidation. Since stainless steel is uncoated, it cannot become discolored or peeled in time. Hence, no question raised about its longevity and shine.
The metal content chromium, a protective barrier against corrosion and oxidation. It usually doesn't rust or tarnish, unless it's exposed to a harsh environment or to elements, like oxygen, water and moisture, for prolonged periods.
One of the most highly praised properties of stainless steel jewelry is that it does not react to sweat, blood, salt, and chlorinated water. Human sweat is composed of ammonia, urea, water, and salt, but not much else. The amount of salt and ammonia in our sweat is what causes silver or copper-based plated jewelry to tarnish when held close to the skin for long periods of time. Thankfully, stainless steel jewelry is resistant to all these natural elements and can therefore be worn for long periods of time without worry.
STAINLESS STEEL & SENSITIVE SKIN
IS STAINLESS STEEL HYPOALLERGENIC ?
Stainless steel is considered hypoallergenic, because it's alloy contains no metal that commonly causes allergic reactions. There is a low risk of causing any allergic reaction, BUT some people with a high sensivity to nickel can react to stainless steel.
Most stainless steel has nickel, but the % varies from type to another. The jump rings we use are made of 304 grade steel, one of those containing the lowest percentage of nickel (18% chromium and 8% nickel).
If you're concerned about skin reactions, we're happy to custom design jewelry for you using safe, 100% nickel-free metal. To know more about different metal options and instructions for non-standard products ordering, click here.
